Local rapper ‘MC Tiny’ surprises mother with an impromptu Happy Birthday Rap during Live Zoom call with rap youth group. Darren aka, MC Tiny, is a member of the weekly rap workshops based in ‘The Hut’ youth centre, Gurranabraher, with Youth Work Ireland Cork.
Due to recent COVID19 restrictions, all of Youth Work Ireland Corks youth groups are now online including the weekly rap workshops. During a recent workshop – Darren revealed it was his mothers birthday. Garry, rap tutor with Cork ETB & Music Generation Cork City, challenged Darren to write a quick rap there and then as a surprise for his mother. Check out the lyrics below in the picture:
It didn’t take long for MC Tiny to write a small rap. Then, with the other members of the group watching on, he preformed his rap to his delighted and proud mother for her birthday. This is just an example of the different ways we, as a people, have been adapting to the current COVID19 restrictions. To combat lockdown boredom, MC Tiny also started his very own podcast which already had some big names on it including Brendan Canty, The Young Offenders & GMC. Due to the youth center in The Hut being closed to comply with COVID19 restrictions, the rap groups have been meeting every Tuesday from 2pm until 4pm to continue to song write, create beats, and record tracks over Zoom. With the guidance of tutor Garry McCarty, the young people have been using an apps called ‘Soundtrapp’ & ‘Google Drive’ to continue to collaborate on their music projects. YWIC Youth Worker Joe Curtin supports the group with Garry every week which allows the young people to connect with others, continue to be creative, and give young people a space every week to express themselves.
The weekly rap workshops with Youth Work Ireland Cork are funded & supported by CORK ETB Youth Services & Music Generation Cork City. For more information on these groups, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
